Microsoft are you serious?

My computer crashed after an automatic Vista update. After I got my computer back up and running everything worked except for wireless components. I got an error message that my computer needed to upload a driver but it didn't have access to direct memory to do so. I tried to reload the driver but since I can't hook up to the Internet, the task was getting more difficult. I found the original disk for my wireless router and tried to upload the driver this way but I still get the message, "the direct memory can not be accessed." Next I attempted the Vista help forums and received a couple replies but the suggestions did not work. The last suggestion was to call Microsoft for help but they will charge me.

Are you kidding me? There update crashed my system and I have to pay them to fix it? How can this be so and why do we allow this to go on? I saw posting after posting of how other Vista users experienced the exact problem. I am drawing a line here and now am thinking of going back to Mac. I am looking for suggestions on the best way to handle my problem with dignity and suggestions on what to do if this doesn't work. I cannot bring myself to pay for something caused by someone else.
